Lucy Jane 6 weeks old

Good grief! 6 weeks already?  Lucy, or Lulu as Hank loves to call her, just continues to be such a sweet, cuddly, mellow baby.  She's growing like crazy, and at her doctor's visit today we found out that you are exactly the same size to the ounce and inch that Hank was when he was born!  Lucy loves to be held, and is super snuggly; although she is completely content to bounce in her bouncy chair or hang out on the floor with her happy apple.  She gives us "googly eyes" now as she's trying to focus on objects, the first real smiles should be here any day now!  She is already sleeping pretty much through the night-usually a long 7 hour stretch and only up once.  I mean, if all babies were as easy as Lucy, I'd have 5 more :)  Hank is still smitten with his sister-he tells her constantly that he loves her and that she's sooo cute.  He's recently started saying that she's his best friend, which makes me sad cause he used to tell me that!

How you measured up:
Height: 22 inches 39th% (19 inches at birth)
Weight: 8 lbs 14 oz 18th% (6lbs 1 oz at birth)
Head: 15 inches 83rd % (13 inches at birth)

Likes at 6 weeks:
  • Tummy time!  Unlike Hank who would scream bloody murder if he even thought he was about to be put on his tummy, you love it!  You will gladly hang on your tummy for 30 minutes at a time.
  • Your pacifier and sometimes I find you sucking on your fist
  • Grunting!!
  • Being carried like a football on your belly on someone's arm
  • The glow worm
  • Looking in mirrors at yourself or looking at Mr. Happy Apple (a family heirloom)
  • bouncing in your bouncy chair-or any other form of motion
  • sleeping snuggled up against mama
  • laying on your changing table looking out the window
  • the sound of the vacuum cleaner-puts you to sleep immediately
  • bows in your hair (or at least mommy likes to think so)

Dislikes at 6 weeks:
  • Gas-sorry Lulu for sharing this with the world, but you are a gassy baby.  It is just about the only thing that will get you fussing
  • the hiccups
  • when I swaddle your arms in-you like to have them up above your head when you sleep
  • when you realize you've been left alone sleeping somewhere-you love to cuddle!

One month birthday

"Really mom?" "Do I need to sit up in this crazy chair?"

Being all fancy in my skirt now that I'm 6 weeks old
 The beginnings of a smile??
Kicked back, chilling out, maxing, relaxing all cool....

Easter Weekend

Some photos of our Easter weekend......

Hank is really into making "funny faces" right now
Since we decided against the double stroller (mostly because Hank has refused to ride in a stroller for nearly a year) Hank now gets lots of rides on dad during our walks.  Surprise, Surprise, now that baby Lucy rides in a stroller, Hank wants to ride also-likely a passing trend.
The Easter bunny is really creepy if you ask me, but Hank just loves him.  He kept asking how the bunny would get to our house, uhh...a car?  Now that I have an inquisitive 2 year old I'm realizing that the whole easter bunny story is not nearly as well thought out as the Santa thing is.

On one of many easter egg hunts-note the Thomas easter basket-a favorite from Aunt Susie and Uncle Kevin

Dyeing eggs with dad-I think its been at least 15 years since I've had the old Paas kit out!  Hank loved this project

My precious babies-I just love how Lucy has such an adoring look on her face, like she already looks up to her big brother.

Welcome Baby Lucy

On March 7th 2012 at 4:07 pm Lucy Jane joined our family.  Unlike her big brother, who was affectionately named the "tank" from day one, she weighed in at a mere 6 lbs 1 oz; although she was 19 1/2 inches long which was rather tall for her early arrival.   She surprised us and decided it was time to come out at 37 weeks along.  As I write this I am still a whole week prior to my actual due date and I still can't quite believe my tiny peanut is already 2 weeks old!  We talked a lot during my pregnancy about how planned a repeat c-section would be, and would it still be exciting given that we were picking her due date and organizing our whole lives around that date?  Well clearly I have learned nothing from my previous birth experience, in that the "plan" is typically out the window in the first 5 minutes.  Of course, we will always remember the surprise on the day of our little princess's arrival.

The day prior while I was at work I noticed what I thought could be some "leaking fluid" (without getting too graphic); however it only went on for about an hour and since I experienced my water clearly breaking with a splash with Hank I figured I would know if it was my water or not.  I continued with my work day everything seemed fine but in the back of my head I thought maybe I should call the doctor just to be sure.  So on my way home from work that day I left a message on the nurses line to the effect of "I'm sure its nothing, but just wanted to check-in"-I hate calling the doctor with questions cause I always feel silly, and actually, this was the first call I've ever made during both pregnancies to the nurses line so maybe that was indication that my mother's instincts were heightened!   They called me back around 4:00 and agreed that it was likely nothing since I wasn't have any contractions or other signs of labor and since my weekly appointment was the next day anyways they just moved me to first thing in the morning and said to come in the next day.  The next morning, I got up at the usual time, got dressed for work, and texted my co-workers letting them know I'd be a little late since my doctor wanted to see me earlier in the day.  Johnny asked if I wanted him to come to the appointment-I said no cause I was sure it was nothing and there was no need for both of us to be late to work.  I thought about throwing in my hospital bag "just in case" since I had just packed it the weekend before, but again thought that seemed silly and started to focus on all I had to get done that day at work since I was going to be late after the appointment and had a huge list of patient's to see that day.

I got to my appointment, doctor put me in the stirrups to do the "litmus test" of amniotic fluid.  She took one look at me and said "you're water is broken, you're having a baby today!".  My initial response was "what, no, I have to go to work today" She of course laughed and said you do realize you're 9 months pregnant, and that this baby was coming at some point?  I was instructed to call my boss, call my husband, call whomever I needed to since I was only headed to the hospital (why didn't I bring my bags ?).  No contractions, baby hadn't dropped, but that silly water was broken! Since my water had be broken for at least 24 hours and the risk of infection was high-I was going to have a c-section as soon as possible (which would be at least 8 hours since I ate breakfast, again wasn't thinking I was having a baby today-oops).  The same exact thing happened with Hank-water breaks but no labor starts, so it seems this is just how my body responds during pregnancy.  No surprises with number 3, right?

I was wheeled over to the hospital, by myself to get checked into a room.  Johnny was scrambling trying to get things in order at work, get the nanny and Hank settled, get my bags from home and get back to me at the hospital.  So we sat in a pre-op room all day waiting the required 8 hours after eating before my c-section scheduled at 3:45.  It was actually kind of nice to just lay around in a bed and watch cable TV-both a luxury I never have in my life.  Hank's nanny dropped him off right before I got prepped for surgery and he was not terribly excited about seeing me hooked up to IV's and stuck in a hospital bed-luckily both sets of Grammy and Grampys were available to entertain him ( and take him for his first McDonalds experience).  Right on schedule I got prepped and at 4:07 Lucy Jane came screaming into the world!  Lucy because we liked it (and Hank helped to decide) and Jane after my grandmother who unfortunately passed away a year ago last March.  I love the idea that Lucy truly demonstrates the circle of life in our family.   She had a head full of dark hair and dark eyes-completely opposite from our blond haired blue eyed boy!  Because she was small and a few weeks early, and because of the increased risk of infection she had to go to the nursery for a while, but I did get to nurse her and spend some time with her before she left.  I was taken to my room a few hours later where all the family and of course my big boy, Hank were ready to meet Lucy.

My recovery was even easier after this c-section, I was up and around and off most pain medication in less than 24 hours.  I was home 3 days later, off all medication and moving around pretty much pain free.  Lucy is so different than Hank was as a baby.  She is content, and happy all the time.  We have yet to hear her cry  for any extended period of time-she'll let out a little yell every once in a while just to remind us that yes she needs to be fed etc.  She is completely happy to sit in her bouncy seat and watch her big brother play and terrorize the house.  She's growing like a weed-at 2 weeks she was quickly approaching 7 lbs and had already grown an inch.  She took to nursing within a day (unlike her  brother who took at least 2 weeks to become a proficient nurser).  I don't know if it is just because she's the second child and I just know what to do with her, or if it is her personality-I suspect some of both, but so far I haven't had that overwhelming feeling that I did adjusting to our first child.  We were all instantly in love with our little Lucy, especially Hank who always wants to help me with her and hold her.  He tells her at least 20 times a day that he loves her.  Johnny and I just keep saying how right it feels for us to be a family of 4.

Here are some pictures of our first days with Lucy....I think I left the house 3 times during my entire maternity leave with Hank-in her first 2 weeks, Lucy has already been to the zoo to ride the train, been to the playground multiple times, the library, Kroger, the river park to throw rocks, and Ikea :)  She is clearly a busy lady...

January Happenings

Typically, January is cold, grey, and miserable resulting in us being cooped up in the house, longing for the days of spring.  However, this year winter has yet to hit in Atlanta for the most part so we've been lucky to have lots and lots of 65 degree days to enjoy the outside.  We're keeping plenty busy enjoying our last few weeks as a family of 3-lots of outside time, feeding the geese, taking hikes, zoo time, playground time, and a trip to the train museum.  As of today, which is actually in February we have at most 5 weeks until BabyGirl's extraction from my uterus.  I will be full term in 3 weeks so really just a month until we should be ready to welcome her into the family.  Her nursery is filling up quickly with adorable pink, purple and floral onesies.  I've been up in the attic pulling down all of our old baby stuff from Hank and still need to sort through all the boxes-nesting is in full swing at the roost! Hank is really into "helping" mommy and daddy at every available opportunity, so he's been helping me fold, unpack, organize baby sister's room.  He is really starting to talk about her all the time-and claims that he "loves her"....we'll see how long that lasts :)  BabySister isn't the only one who got a full room makeover...my big boy is out of the crib and into his big bed-which he loves and actually sleeps better in than the crib.  He loves to show people his "new room", and I am really pleased with how they both turned out.

In other new additions to our house, we finally got around to putting a roof on our deck.  Our deck is miserably hot about 6 months of the year and basically goes unused.  Adding the roof has to be one of the best additions we've done to the house yet!  I haven't gotten around to furnishing the new room yet-but it's like we've added a whole new room onto the house.  Hank loves to "camp" on the deck-and I'm hoping it becomes a great playspace for the kiddoes in the months to come.

Johnny has been crazy busy (aka working every night after a full workday until midnight) getting Ritger & Ritger properties up and running with its first investment property.  Our first tenants moved in February 1st to the "rental house"-and Johnny has officially added landlord to his many hats.   Johnny has spent so much time at the property this month that anytime Hank can't find his dad he tells me "Johnny's at the rental house".  (yes he still refers to his dad exclusively as Johnny-they are on a first name basis).  Hank and I are thrilled to have Johnny back at home in the evenings (especially this 9 month pregnant, overtired mama).  Although, he is over there now responding to a call that " the dryer was shooting sparks when it turned on".....

31 weeks with Baby Girl
So add in preschool open houses and crazy enrollment processes for next fall, the busiest time of year for me at work, a head cold that hit the house and doesn't want to leave, a great baby shower brunch thrown by my wonderful Becky, Valentine's Day activities, and preparations for Johnny's upcoming 30th birthday...and that's been our last 6 weeks in a nutshell....whew..no wonder my back is killing me.

Babygirl 27 weeks

The belly shot is 27 weeks, but as I'm actually getting around to write this I'm now 28 weeks--welcome back to the third trimester!  I also get one less week this time as repeat c-sections are done at 39 weeks, as we just scheduled the c-section for March 22 so 10 weeks to go!!

So a pregnancy update:

1. How am I feeling: pregnant period.  Not really tired, but we're reaching that point where its much harder to get comfortable in bed and sleep becomes more and more scarce.  I fully believe this is just mother nature's way of preparing the unknowing mother for the coma they are about experience in a few months.  I'd say both pregnancies have been pretty similar.  I never have any terrible complaints but the further along I get the more the little annoyances start to build-up.  Heartburn is kicking in full force, twinges in my lower back, pregnancy induced carpal tunnel, pregnancy induced nosebleeds (seriously? please explain this one), leg cramps at night, swollen feet at the end of the day etc.

2. How's BabyGirl:  She's a mover!  Because of the way my placenta is attached this time, I can feel her movements much more than I could with Hank.   Hank tended to leave my internal organs alone too-she loves to thump on my bladder and push up on my diaphragm.

3. Doctor's Report:  I passed my glucose test last week-HORRAY!!  Although, I might be the only woman in the world that doesn't mind the drink-must be my sweet tooth.  Blood pressure is actually running low-DOUBLE HORRAY!  I've gained about 17 pounds which is significantly less than with Hank at this point, but I am also much more active this time around-If I recall the pounds really start packing on in the last few months.  Heart rate was 145 at last visit.  So my doctor is a South African gentleman and he always says in his great accent "well Kim, it appears that you are pregnant".  Aka things are sailing along swimmingly....

4. Birth plan: Things are so much easier this time around.  No childbirth classes, no hospital tour, no breastfeeding classes.  The repeat c-section is scheduled; however if I go into labor naturally before that date I will attempt a natural delivery.

5. Does BabyGirl have a name?  no- not even close.  and she will not have a name until she has arrived.  We have several options, that change from day to day and really feel like we just haven't found the perfect name yet.  So, no we will not be sharing the names in the running, because we don't want any opinions from outside sources!  Last time everyone waited for the gender, this time they will have to wait for a name!

So here we are...10 weeks and counting....

Happy Christmas

Whew...we survived Christmas, and I am so glad to have all decorations down, toys organized, and our normal routine back.  We did have a really nice holiday-the first Christmas we've ever spent in our own home and let me tell you it was sooo much easier to not have to travel all over with an over-tired, over-gifted 2 year old (not to mention an over-tired 7 month pregnant mama).  I hosted both sets of grandparents for Christmas dinner-a standing rib roast, my first!   Hank was so excited about Santa coming to "bring train presents"-The year could be summed up as "the year of the train".  Hank added about 150 pieces of track and about 20 train cars to the current railroad-talk about major expansion!  I now have a huge railroad set up in my living room everyday and step on no less than 5 "steamies" a day.  There are days now that I realize I've talked more about trains and what type of freight they have than anything else.  Johnny was off for almost 2 weeks, and I had about a week off from work so it was really nice to have lots of time at home together.  We stayed very busy though, painting and organizing both Hank and BabyGirl's room (I'll save a whole other post for that one-especially the big boy bed transition), working on the investment property which is just about ready for renters, attending preschool orientation sessions for next fall, and working with the city to get permitted for our screen porch addition to the house.   Never a dull moment in our house....

We rang in the new year asleep as usual, I lasted through about 20 minutes of the Ryan Seacrest rockin new year before I realized that there was no good reason to stay up until midnight (maybe it was all the sparkling grape juice).  I always love the start of a new year though-a fresh start, a time to get clean and organized in my house!  Only 10 weeks until BabyGirl arrives--time for some nesting, my favorite!

While it was fun....so glad I have a whole year before I have to tackle the holidays again!!
